Q: Are there any specific health concerns related to the breed?

A: Whilst there is no specific concerns related to the breed, you should ask the breeder about what tests the dog & bitch have had such as hip score, eye & elbow tests and coat colour

Q: How much exercise does a Portuguese Pointer require?

A: One hour plus per day. They are an active and high energy Gundog. Your breeder will advise you as to the amount of exercise a puppy will require. As a guide it is five minutes for every month of age up until your dog reaches a year old

Q: Amount of grooming required?

A: They have a short coat so grooming only required once a week. Ears and teeth should be checked at regular intervals. Regular worming and flea treatments should be undertaken

Q: Do they shed their coat?

A: Yes but not excessively

Q: How easy are they to train?

A: The Portuguese Pointer has a very gentle nature and will not respond well to any harsh form of training. Gentle, repetitive training is required with an emphasis on consistency. Their instincts and high prey drive make recall/whistle training a must

Q: Are they good in the house?

A: Whilst they are a very active dog out on walks once home they will very happily laze around the house. If there is someone to lean or sit on all the better
